It is planned to build a new residential area near Liepāja’s Southern forts
The area around Liepāja’s Southern forts between Klaipeda Street and the beach is planned to be developed as a new residential area. A new local plan has been developed for a 25.4-hectare city-owned plot of land at 138 Klaipėda Street, with the intention of allocating this area for the construction of new housing, informs Zita Lazdāne, head of the public relations and marketing department of the municipality. The local plan will create prerequisites for the development of the residential and public built-up area, envisaging the construction of low- and multi-storey multi-apartment residential houses, as well as service facilities, while providing recreation opportunities in the immediate vicinity of the houses. The plot of land includes the territory at the southern border of the city between the Pērkone channel and the Baltic Sea in an area of 25.4 hectares. The plot of land is bordered by Vētra Street in the north and the city boundary in the south, in its middle part there is a fortification structure – Liepāja fortress battery No. 8 or Southern forts. From the earlier one-piece zoning, several have been separated in detail, taking into account the neighboring buildings, the surrounding natural values and the planning documents developed so far. Most of the planning territory is allocated for the function of housing development – the south and part of the land plot are allocated for living. In the northern part, a multi-apartment residential building is planned – at Klaipėda Street, the maximum permitted height of buildings is set to nine floors, gradually moving to the sea side to a five-floor building. On the other hand, in the south, the construction of low-rise residential houses up to three stories high is planned. The central part of the plan is dedicated to recreation and greenery.
