Pļavnieki – a neighborhood of the city of Riga in the suburbs of Latgale
History and importance in Riga
Pļavnieki is one of the newest microdistricts of Riga, located in the eastern part of Riga. Until the annexation of this region to the territory of Riga, only agricultural land areas, or simply meadows, spread here, from which the origin of the name Pļavnieki is also clear. Pląvnieki multi-storey residential area was basically built in the 1980s. Back in 1980, when planning the new Soviet living standards-compliant residential complex, only open fields that belonged to Stopiņi parish spread here. But now Pļavnieki is a relatively densely built-up part of Riga.
Territory and construction
Construction started in 1985. Mainly nine-story houses of the 602 series of large panels were used in the construction. The micro-district is intended for accommodation of approximately 60,000 inhabitants. The northern border of Pļavnieki – Augusta Deglava street – the introduction of the new high-speed highway Riga-Moscow, built with the most visually and functionally successful houses of the 119 series. Three 18-storey buildings have been built in the central part of Płavnieki. The neighborhood of the intersection of Keldiša and Lubānas streets is set aside for industrial construction. Compared to the micro-districts built in the past, much more attention has been paid to the variations in the construction of the entrances and ground floors of residential buildings, providing for various crews and commercial establishments, as well as the coloristic solution of the buildings. One of the main streets of Pļavnieku is Keldiša street.
