Purvciems – a neighborhood of the city of Riga, a suburb of Vidzeme
History and importance in Riga
The name “Purvciems” appeared at the end of the nineteenth century, which was given to Hausman’s bog, which was located within the boundaries of the modern microdistrict. The total area of the neighborhood is 501.7 ha. The residents of Purvciema are pleased with the green areas – the Biķernieku forest and the recently opened spacious Purvciema park. This district of Riga is considered to be the most convenient in terms of infrastructure – the city center is easy to reach by public transport, while when going on vacation outside of Riga you don’t have to spend time in traffic jams, because all major highways are a few streets away. A district development plan was developed and a new street network was created, resulting in more intensive construction of single-family houses. In 1965, the Purvciema residential complex began to take shape. Intensive construction of Purvciema continued in the 1970s and 1980s, when large multi-storey residential buildings were built. Along the highways of Purvciema, freely laid 9-story multi-section buildings were placed. In 1985, the first French projects were built in Purvciem and for the first time in Riga. Purvciema neighborhood association is the newest Riga neighborhood association. It was founded on June 13, 2018 and is located at 5-53 Stirnu Street.
