Riga city microdistrict: Iļguciems.
Iļguciems is a neighborhood of Riga city in Pārdaugava, Kurzeme district. The neighborhood of Iļguciems is located a little north of the central neighborhoods of Pārdaugava. It borders the neighborhoods of Spilve, Ķipsala, Dzirciem and Imanta. The boundaries of the Iļguciem neighborhood are the railway circle. The southern part of Iļguciems includes the Grivas residential complex. The main streets are Dzirciema, Dagmāras, Daugavgrīvas, Buļļu and Lidonų streets. The total area of Iļguciems neighborhood is 2,442 km², which is about two times less than the average area of the neighborhood in Riga.
The Nordeķu manor was also located on the territory of Iļguciems, in the 1790s it was called the Nordeķu manor (at one time it was also called the Fogela, Grāve and Reima manor – according to the owners). The manor once owned 185 ha of land, which was used mainly for grain cultivation. In the 19th century, most of this land was divided into construction plots, leaving only the territory of the manor center ensemble with the wide park undeveloped. . The detailed plan for the complex reconstruction of the district was developed in 1968 at the Institute “Pilsētprojekts”. Most of the buildings of the manor were demolished in 1968, when Bullė Street was widened. The project determined a radical reconstruction of the district, creating a new street network, 3 micro-districts, a public center and a district park in the territory of the Nordeķu manor ensemble.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Iļguciems was still sparsely populated. In 1816, there were 71 houses with 450 inhabitants. Starting from the end of the 18th century, various factories and manufactories began to be built in Iļguciems, but in the 19th century, the rapid development of an industrial zone took place here. At the beginning of the 19th century, this part of Riga began to develop into a distinct industrial center, the population here continuously increased, because the factories needed labor. These factors also influenced the construction of Ilģuciem. The first fragmentary construction projects of the neighborhood were developed in the 20th century. at the beginning and in the 20th century in 30 years. The proximity of the port of Daugavgriva and the permission to build stone houses also had a beneficial effect on the development of Iļguciems. In the 1950s, the first typical residential buildings (series 303) were built for the workers of the Riga cement and slate factory. In the 1960s, a new multi-storey residential area was built in Iļguciems.
