History and importance in Riga
The origin of the tale dates back to the 20th century. At the end of the 20s, it was determined by a clear urban planning policy, and the developed master plan of Riga. At one time, the current territory of Teikas was intended more as a workers’ suburb – it was bounded on two sides by the Riga railway circle, on the other side of which was the historical Čiekurkalns workers’ district, Biķernieku forest and Purvciems. According to the plans of the time, the area was developed as a residential colony near the Vidzeme highway (now: Brīvības gatves). Zemitana Square (in Soviet times: July 21 Square) was the first to be built, which is the main square of Teika. The municipality built small apartment buildings in the vicinity of Teika. Historically, those who settled in this micro-district of Riga built houses for several families in order to later earn additional income from rent.
Territory and Construction
Several Latvian technology companies, together with real estate developers and the cultural center, have joined forces to create an innovative environment in the VEF quarter – a place to work, live, relax and create, for people who are fascinated by the possibilities of technology and innovation. The VEF quarter is marked in the city development plan with the potential to develop into the new center of Riga. In the city development plan, Teika is planned to be preserved mainly as an area of compact private houses and multi-storey houses with buildings of limited height – up to 5 floors – along Brīvības gatvi. The location of the neighborhood serves as a prerequisite for successful new multi-apartment or terraced house projects. new projects:
