The idea of reducing the property tax burden did not get support in the Saeima.

From 2020, the idea of exempting from the real estate tax the dwelling in which a person has declared and lives and the corresponding land in cities and villages up to 1.5 ha, and in homesteads up to 2 ha, with a total cadastral value of up to 100,000 euros, did not receive support in the Saeima. On May 23, the majority of the parliament did not support the amendments to the real estate tax law proposed by the currently opposition ZZS MPs Danas Reizniece Ozolas, Armandas Krauzes, Andas Čakšas, Raimonds Bergmanis, Jānis Dūklavas, Viktoras Valaiņš, Uldas Augulis and Janīnas Jalinskas. Saeima MP Dana Reizniece Ozola stated from the parliament tribune: that she will be able to climb the tribune again and throw all kinds of jabs, and ask why now, where were you before. “This task was actually already on the agenda of the previous government. But why were the real estate tax rates not changed and these restrictions set? Because there is a complete mess in the country with cadastral values. 2500 order differences in cadastral values between the borders of Riga and Latgale. Therefore, it was the task of the Ministry of Justice to organize cadastral values by the spring of last year, to develop a new methodology that would also correspond to market values. But that task was not done. And in the fall, the Minister of Justice Dzintars Rasnačs also mentioned that he will not advance these amendments, because they are politically sensitive, he does not do so during the pre-election period,” emphasized D. Reizniece Ozola. She reminded that in the agenda of the current government, this issue has been canceled for the middle of 2020, although it is known that there are already implementations.
