Zolitūde – a neighborhood of the city of Riga, a suburb of Zemgale

History and importance in Riga

The name Zolitude comes from the French word solitude, which means “solitude”, emphasizing the silence and peace outside the densely populated Old Town of Riga. Zolitūde is a neighborhood of the city of Riga in Pārdaugava, a suburb of Zemgale. Zolitude borders Imanta and Šampeteri. About 20,000 inhabitants live in Zolitude. In Zolitūde, private houses began to be built in the 1950s, but the construction of panel buildings began in 1985. Unlike other micro-districts, buildings in Zolitūde are built by varying the number of floors in sections (6-10 floors) and using tower buildings (16 floors), thus creating a richer district silhouette.
